Little Black Dress: The skinny

So… what is this Little Black Dress of which we speak?

Why – it’s a girl thing, of course!

Like having a penchant for purchasing very pretty but completely impractical shoes, an exhaustive knowledge of who’s dating who in Celebsville and needing to go to the loo in pairs, Little Black Dress books are an essential part of every girl’s life.

Smart, sassy and d*mn sexy, the Little Black Dress collection is more than mere chick-lit. We search high and low to offer the modern girl (that’s you, that is) the coolest in contemporary romantic fiction and guaranteed satisfaction every time. But when the LBD team aren’t tirelessly working to bring you more fabulous love stories, we’ll be online here filling you in on what we’re living, loving, and like, so totally over.

Want to know more about us? Then have a little look-see at our profiles. And then click on the links to check out some of our favourite sites, Little Black Dress authors and, of course, the official Little Black Dress site – go on, you know you want to…

Animal Magic - Leaping Lemurs

Animals - they're brilliant. So brilliant that we've decided to dedicate a section of the LBD blog to them. Welcome to Animal Magic - a celebration of our furry and feathered friends and their weird and wonderful world.

This week it's more dancing as we present the mesmerising movements of a group of Lemurs dancing at sunset- ahhhhh.

"Hit Me Britney One More Time"

Is what thirsty guests at the Viceroy Hotel, California, could soon be hollering.

Apparently, during her recent stay at the Viceroy, Ms Spears was so taken with the hotel's 'Cameo Bar' that she asked for, filled in and returned an application form in the hope of becoming a member of the bar staff. O Britney, Britney, Britney what are you like!

Is She Really Going Out With Him? 3

Posts dedicated to rumours of romance and bizarre couplings in Celebsville.

Today - Lily Allen and Ed from The Chemical Brothers.

The pair were pictured walking down the road together - they were not holding hands but they were smiling. Hmmmmmm - what can this mean? Are they collaborating on a track perhaps? Or are they making sweet music of another kind...?

Animal Magic - Shake a tail feather

Animals - they're brilliant. So brilliant that we've decided to dedicate a section of the LBD blog to them. Welcome to Animal Magic - a celebration of our furry and feathered friends and their weird and wonderful world.

This week we're shining the spotlight on the remarkable dancing talents of the Mannequin bird (as featured on the fabulous QI) - this wee chap can moonwalk better than Michael!

O.M.G!

Have seen the photos from Mrs Beckham's recent photo shoot in Paris!

There are only two possible explanations for these outfits:

1. The stylist didn't turn up.

2. The stylist was drunk.

Click here and here to see the lil' beauts.

Put your hand on your heart...

...and tell me that you're not excited about the fact that Kylie's back! Even if you're not that excited right now (shame on you) you won't be able to help yourself once you hear her new single - 2 Hearts.

Kylie's taken the sexy, bluesy, 'oh la la' of the Scissor Sisters and Goldfrapp and mixed in her own superstar style to create another piece of pop perfection. Combine that with a vid which sees her strutting about like a S&M Marilyn Monroe and you've got one hell of a comeback -hurrah!

Is She Really Going Out With Him? 2

Posts dedicated to rumours of romance and bizarre couplings in Celebsville.

Today - Jennifer Aniston and Orlando Bloom

Spotted together at an exclusive resort in Mexico. Apparently they share the same agent and were attending said agents wedding. According to some of the other wedding guests they were sharing the odd kiss too. Oh we so want this one to be true!

Animal Magic - Monkey Business 1

Animals - they're brilliant. And we've decided that it's about time we dedicated a section of the LBD blog to them. So welcome to Animal Magic a celebration of our furry and feathered friends and their weird and wonderful world.

First up, allow us to introduce you to Charlie the Karate Chimp - a super smart simian with a penchant for Martial Arts.

Little Black Dress goes to the movies....

Atonement has to be the best book-to-film adaptation since Ann Hathaway sashayed her way across Runway's foyer to serve Meryl Streep. Not only is the story a corker which will have you weeping into your popcorn for about 2hours over the injustices of war; not only does it star the very talented Mr James McAvoy; not only does it question the security of the novelist/reader relationship and the very nature of atonement, but it manages to do all this while oozing a sultry 1930s glamour. A must-see on every level.

Today's "Are they? Aren't they?" coupling - Sienna Miller and Rhys Ifans

They say they're 'just good friends'. Loads of other people say they've seen them snogging! Who do you believe?

'The Big Day'

This BBC1 programme provoked cries of disbelief here at LDB towers. The concept is that your wedding is planned in five days by your friends and family. You and your betrothed have no idea what is going on and have only to turn up on time. How can this be a good idea?!! Think of everything that could go wrong: (in an increasing scale of disaster) the reception being in Pizza Hut, losing all your friends and family forever, the dress being hideous. Moreover, who could willingly give up planning the most self-centred and indulgent day you're ever going to get? This is your one chance to debate over what shade of sugared almond to plump for, to force your sister into a peach puffball, to obsess over stationary for god's sake! Actually on second thoughts, maybe this is the way weddings should be...any thoughts out there?

Hallow and Goodbye…

Finishing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is a bit like ending a seven-year relationship, albeit a slightly unconventional one with an entirely fictional wizarding universe. Does anyone else feel they need therapy now, or at the very least an obsessive deconstruction with girlfriends over a bottle of wine? ‘Why did he leave me??!!!!’

Fringe benefits

Little Black Dress is looking forward to August and to booking a trip up to beautiful Edinburgh for a comedy fix at the Edinburgh Fringe – the best place outside the latest LBD title to get us giggling.

We plan to support the sisterhood by seeing the lovely Josie Long’s show ‘Trying is Good’ (love the title, love the homemade poster!), or the irrepressibly girlie Lucy Porter’s ‘Love-in’. Afterwards we will be haunting various venue bars on the look out for a lonely comic far from home- GSOH is so attractive in a man…

Just Another Manic Monday

As we wave goodbye to the weekend and enter the working week once more, things can seem a little gloomy.

But all is not lost - the sun is out and this post contains the fabulous folky phonics of Feist - guaranteed to put a smile on your face.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO US

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO US

HAAAAPPY BIIIIIIIIIRTHDAY DEEEEEAARRR USSSSSSSS

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO US

Yep, that's right it's LBD's birthday.

Little Black Dress has reached the grand old age of ONE (!) which means we're celebrating 12 glorious months of publishing gorgeous modern romances, for all you glamorous girls out there.

So it's on with the party frocks and out on the town we go - hurrah!

Are they? Aren't they?

Looks like Chantelle & Preston's marriage may not be not be quite as doomed as it first seemed (i.e. when they announced that they were getting divorced).

This week the pair were spotted returning to the Brighton home they once shared, with bags full of groceries. So was a romantic meal and a spot of reconciliation on the cards perhaps?

Now if I was cynical I might suggest that this whole divorce debacle was a rather cunning way of the couple making even more squids when they sell their 'How we realised that we just couldn't live without each other' story with exclusive photographs of their 're-newing of vows ceremony'. But as I don't have a cynical bone in my body (Uh, uh. No way, not me) I will just suggest that you watch this space...and the new stands!

C'est chic n'est pas?'

Tour de France last weekend, Bastille Day this weekend...at Little Black Dress we're experiencing a trés French moment! There's a veritable chocolate box of tantalisingly romantic flicks to pick from at the cinema - Ma Vie En Rose, Moliere, Paris Je t'aime...

If you're still not satisfied after these, why not hunt out the original Parisian love story Breathless or 2004's Before Sunset on DVD? On the small screen BBC2's series Paris just makes the LBD team want to relocate the office to a leafy boulevard in the Marais and thrash out cover issues on a terrace café. La Petite Robe Noir - it could work!!! It is the home city of Coco Chanel after all...

O.M.G!

It's official The Spice Girls are reforming.

This should be interesting...

Splitsville

Loves young dream (otherwise known as Chantelle and Preston) have announced that they're filing for divorce. Didn't see that one coming.

Still at least they can console themselves with the big fat cheques, due to drop through the letter box any day now, from their 'My Marriage Hell' tabloid exclusives. Harsh? Why yes. But fair? Oh I think so.

It's Friday I'm In Love...

...with Kate Nash's new song "Foundations".

With lyrics like...

"You said I must eat so many lemons 'cause I am so bitter.

I said I'd rather be with your friends mate 'cause they are much fitter."

...how can you resist.

ps. It does have a couple of rude words in it

It's Friday I'm (also) In Love...

...with "Boyz" by M.I.A.

Paris Goes Down

...for three days!

So Ms Hilton has managed to serve a measly 3 days of a 23 day sentence (which had already been reduced from 45). Apparently she's been freed early due to a 'medical condition'. Although the exact nature of said 'condition' is yet to be released, I'm guessing it has something to do with a severe allergic reaction to being behind bars. I would imagine that the poor lamb came out in hives as soon as she laid eyes on the natty orange boiler suit she was going to have to wear and her tiny mind would have been totally fried by the idea of living sans mobile and credit cards for the next month.

Paris has since been tagged and placed under house arrest for the next 40 days - anyone want to place bets on how long it takes for diamond encrusted ankle tags to become all the rage in LA? Five quid says Posh will be the first.

Big Brother...

...do we really care?

Despite having managed to avoid watching any of this years BB I still seem to be fully aware of all goings on in house. How does this happen? I did not ask for this. But it would seem that my subconscious just can't resist it. It must be picking up snippets from the fronts of other peoples papers, overhearing conversations at bus stops and have possibly even been sleep-watching the live overnight feed.

So anyhoo, I have decided that if I really must know what's going on then I shall choose where I'm getting my info from. And I choose the brilliant BB blog of Grace Dent. Hilariously honest, even if you don't like Big Brother this is well worth a read, so get clicking and check it out.

It's Friday I'm In Love...

with 'Captain Jack Sparrow'!

So 'Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End' hasn't been getting the best reviews in the world. But do we care? Hell no.

When a film stars the delectable Johnny Depp as the deliriously funny Captain Jack Sparrow, we won't hear a word said against it. Savvy?

O.M.G!

My So Called Life is finally out on DVD!

Before The O.C, before Dawson and his Creek, there was My So Called Life - a totally genius teen drama that followed the trials and tribulations of 15-year-old Angela Chase and her misfit mates as they muddled their way through American high-school life. It also stars a very young and very yummy Jared Leto as misunderstood bad boy - 'Jordan Catalano'.

Music of the Month - May

So the Spice Girls are rumored to be reforming (again) but Girl Power in music existed long before Posh, Ginge and the other three started strutting their stuff. This months musical mixture pays tribute to some of the original girl groups.

Baby Love - The Supremes

Leader Of The Pack - The Shangri-Las

Be Me Baby - The Ronettes

We Are Family - Sister Sledge

Walk Like An Egyptian - The Bangles

It's Friday I'm In Love With...

...Truffle Shuffle.

These guys sell fabulous retro-tees inspired by 80's movies, music, TV and cartoons, all at a rather reasonable price (and obviously all of a much, much higher standard than my homage to Truffle Shuffle below!).

O.M.G!

Natasha Bedingfield's new song is called "I Wanna Have Your Babies"!

Wait a minute what's that noise? Is it a train approaching? Is it heard of stampeding elephants? No that would be the sound of every available man in the country heading for the hills.

You might be thinking it Tash but don't say it girl! And certainly don't say it in a song that's going to be released worldwide - ay currumba!

The sun has got it's hat on...

...hip, hip hurray!

Looks like summer's kicking in early this year which means it's time to banish your winter boots to the back of the wardrobe and set your feet free as you slip back in to your faithful ol' flip flops.

Yes they kill your feet for the first 2 weeks of wearing but once you've broken them in it's - "Flip Flop you can't stop".

O.M.G!

Bryan Ferry has told a German magazine that "...the Nazis knew how to put themselves in the limelight and present themselves..." and that he considers "...Leni Riefenstahl's movies and Albert Speer's buildings and the mass parades and the flags - just amazing. Really beautiful."

We are speechless!

Music of the Month - April

Here are a few cracking tunes to take your mind off that queasy feeling you get after consuming your own body weight in Easter Eggs.

Arctic Monkeys - Brian Storm
Dark, driving beats in the no holds barred return from the super cool simians. Those who doubted they'd last more than one album prepare to eat your hats.

Mark Ronson - Stop Me
Ronson re-produces and re-introduces this classic Smiths song to 2007 and gets away with it - the man can do no wrong. Seriously.

Calvin Harris - Acceptable In The 80s
Deeley boppers, moon boots, mobile phones the size of brieze blocks: all were acceptable in the 80s. Master Harris's dirty disco ditty gives props to the much maligned decade.

Christina Aguilera - Candyman
Sweet, sassy 40s swing beats that will have you pulling on your dancing shoes on and heading to the nearest Lindy Hop.

Mika - Love Today
Be a lover not a hater. Mika's latest poptastic tune will fill you with happy, happy, joy, joy.

O.M.G!

Only 24 hours till Primark opens on Oxford St!!!!

Culture Vulture

As an LBD fan we know that you're so much more than just a pretty face - you're smart, you're sassy, you're a woman of the world. You, Mrs, are a Culture Vulture.

We recommended hotfooting it to the Victoria & Albert Museum in London to check out The Jameel Gallery - home to the most stunning collection of Islamic art you ever did see.

And while you're there you can indulge your love of fashion in the New York Fashion Now exhibit, get your celeb fix with Kylie: The Exhibition and shop till you drop in the V&A Shop - who said museum's were boring!

It's all in the jeans

This week I have mostly been in search of that most elusive of things -
the perfect pair of jeans.

I know that they exist because I have owned them. I have loved them. I have cherished them. I have worn them until they were totally worn out. But what I have never done, upon finding my dream denims, is remember to buy two pairs of them.

This is really very silly of me. I should have learnt by now that, every time I’ve found and purchased the perfect style of trews the manufacturers will automatically cease producing them. Which is why, since my last pair of denims gave up the ghost (...both knees and the backside), I’ve been lost in the dreaded Jean Jungle.

My life has become a blur of blue denim, black denim, grey, white, even yellow denim. There’s high waited, low rising, skinny fitting, boyfriend bagging, tight flaring, wide flaring...ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

All a girl wants is a pair of jeans that are comfy but still makes her legs and b*tt look good - surely that's not too much to ask!

Well not according to I Love Jeans it’s not. These guys claim to be able to help you find your perfect pair of denims without you even having to leave the house – hallelujah! Here’s hoping they're as good as they say…

Know where to purchase the perfect pair of jeans? Share the love here...please.

Famous Follicles

It seems to me that every time I open a newspaper or magazine, at the moment, another star’s barnet is up for discussion. Clearly it’s ‘the' hot topic so let’s get involved:

First up there's poor old Britney 'Shears' who hit the headlines a couple o’ weeks back when she walked into a hair salon, grabbed a razor and proceeded to shave her head. Now whilst I’m tempted to say that the close crop she’s currently sporting is a vast improvement on the manky hair- extensions and bad dye jobs of old, clearly all is not well in Brit World at the mo and so it’s perhaps best if we leave her alone for now.

So next up - Lindsay Lohan. Last week Lindsay’s locks made front page news because apparently she’d….(drum roll please)….CHANGED THE COLOUR OF HER HAIR! But when it came to her chosen colour, reports were conflicting. Is she now a redhead? A brunette? A blond…oh who cares!

And finally there was no escaping the fact that Posh Spice has gone and got herself a new ‘do’ too. In fact this is her second new hairstyle in almost as many weeks – if only she’d consider changing her facial expression as often.

Although it has to be said that there is something mighty familiar about Vicky B’s current cut...

But where, oh where, have we seen that style before...

Music of the Month - March

The evenings are getting lighter, the breeze is getting warmer and the daffs are out, it can only mean one thing – winter is over. Hurrah!

So with this in mind here’s are our top five tunes - guaranteed to put a spring in your step:

Gwen Stefani – Sweet Escape
Sparkly pop with a sexy shimmy thrown in for good measure.

Regina Spektor – Fidelity
Sweet strings and pretty piano combine with a kooky catch in her voice to make to the loveliest love song.

Gossip – Standing In The Way of Control
Lordy, this lady has one hell of a voice.

CSS – Off The Hook
Five girls with guitars + a dude on drums = a brilliant Brazillian Band

Girls Aloud vs Sugababes – Walk This Way
At last a charity single which is made to sounds good as well as do some good.

Criminally good TV

So once again we find ourselves at Monday morning, the weekend already a distant memory *sigh*. But there is at least one thing to look forward to on a Monday and that's Prison Break

Now let's get one thing clear, under no circumstances does the Little Black Dress Team's love of Prison Break have anything to do with Wentworth Miller or his yummy torso - uh uh no way. We tune in to Prison Break every week for the following reasons:

  • The gritty drama
  • The pursuit of justice
  • The love and loyalty between brothers
  • The... 0h who are we kidding. Yes it's good drama, with a decent storyline but there's really only one reason why we love Prison Break so - hit the play button below.

Music of the Month - February

February - the month of St Valentine’s Day. A time for love and romance and hearts and flowers and blah, blah, BLAH.

If like
us and, fabulous LBD author, Rachel Gibson you are of the opinion that 14th Feb has a tendency "to suck", then check out the jaded jukebox selection below – they feel your pain.

Elvis - Heartbreak Hotel

Adam Sandler (in The Wedding Singer) - Love Stinks

10cc - I'm Not In Love

Patsy Cline - She's Got You

Dolly Parton - Jolene

Need a lunchtime distraction? (Sometimes even we busy Little Black Dress types do.)

Need to find out what happened to Chesney Hawkes, Betty Boo and Timmy Mallett? (Why wouldn't you?)

Blue Monday?

Is the 22nd January the worst day of the year? Is today... Blue Monday? Well with the cold, the colds we're suffering from and the fact that it is Monday, the Little Black Dress team can certainly believe that it is. But do not despair. Why don't you follow out example and cheer yourself up with one, two or all three of the following things:
1) Chocolate
2) A Little Black Dress book of your choice
3) Wentworth Miller in Prison Break - we would definitely help him hide out if he were really on the run.
Just thinking about those three has made us feel better!
